What is a ductless mini-split heat pump?

Go Direct  June 15, 2021

Also called “mini splits” and “zoned HVAC,” ductless mini-split heat pumps are HVAC systems that don’t use ducts to move cool or hot air to the various rooms it’s needed. Instead, ductless mini-split systems use individual air handling units to condition the air inside different zones of a building. That means that, in houses or businesses without existing ductwork, mini split systems can be a flexible and convenient solution for air conditioning the space.

  • A ductless mini-split system comprises an indoor air handling unit and an outdoor compressor/condenser that are connected by refrigerant tubing. The indoor unit is usually mounted high on a wall and forces cool air directly into the interior space. Multiple air handlers can be connected to a single outside compressor, and can efficiently cool or heat different zones of a building depending on the need. This leads to a more efficient system and simpler system than a traditional HVAC system.

Should I switch to a ductless mini-split system from my window units?

A ductless mini-split heat pump system is in some ways similar to a window-mounted A/C unit: both types generally work room-to-room, making them more efficient than a central heating or cooling system. On the other hand, both a mini split and a window unit are more visible than a central HVAC. However, mini split systems and window units have a number of differences.

Ductless mini-split systems are generally more expensive than window A/C units, and require a professional to install. That higher initial cost can pay big dividends later. Mini split systems are quieter, usually sleeker-looking than bulky window units, and are safer.

A window-mounted A/C system is easily removable by an intruder, who then has easy access through an open window. Mini splits only require three-inch holes, which are impossible to gain access through. Plus, many states and localities have tax incentives for installing ductless mini-split systems due to their efficiency gains over other systems.

What if I already have central air or heating?

If your home or business already has the ductwork and conditioning unit of a central HVAC system, you probably don’t need a ductless mini-split heat pump to replace your current system.

However, if you build an addition to your building, or have an area that isn’t currently served by the ductwork, installing a mini split system could be a good way to save extending those ducts. A typical duct system loses 20-30% of conditioned air through inefficiencies in the ductwork, making a ductless system a great choice for any additional heating or cooling needs in your home or work space.
