What are the Different Types of HVAC Systems?

  • Winter is making its way around the corner, so having a quality HVAC system more important now than ever, otherwise, the temperatures could get quite unpleasant. An HVAC system consists of 9 essential components which include an Air Return, Filter, Exhaust Outlets, Ducts, Electrical Elements, Outdoor Unit, Compressor, Coils, and Blower. These components are responsible for functioning together as a team to regulate the heating, cooling, and ventilation of your home or establishment. Whether you live in a single-family home, a lakeside mansion, or work in any kind of industrial or commercial building, you will still need a quality HVAC system. Now, when it comes to choosing the right type of HVAC system for your home or business, there are more than a few options out there, making the decision feel daunting and almost impossible. Below is a breakdown of the different types of HVAC systems to help you decide which one you need!

    Ductless Mini-Split Systems

First off, we have the duct-free HVAC system, also known as a ductless mini-split system. This HVAC system is quite different from the other systems because it does not require ducts and has individual units in each room compared to one single unit or a unit split into two components. This type of HVAC system is great for providing independent temperature control throughout the establishment and is usually mounted indoors attached to an outdoor compressor. This type of HVAC system is best suited for hotels or venues with multiple rooms requiring different temperatures.

    Heating and Cooling Split Systems

It’s likely you’ve heard of Heating and Cooling Split HVAC systems since this HVAC system is the most popular. Just as the name suggests, this system is split between two major units, one for heating and one for cooling. The HVAC split system is best suited for larger homes or establishments with larger indoor space and cabinets to store indoor parts. There are a few different types of split systems as well; here at Go Direct Appliance, we carry gas split systems, heat pump split systems, and straight cool split systems. Heat pump and straight cool systems are both electric, while the gas systems, obviously, run on gas. Any of these systems are great because split systems are more customizable than the other systems and placements are much more flexible since it has components that go both inside and outside. The cooling system outside uses refrigerant, coils, and compressors to cool air and a fan to blow out any hot air. The heating system is placed inside, typically in a basement or storage space, which uses gas to produce heat, and a traditional thermostat is used to monitor the temperature.

    Hybrid Split Systems

The hybrid split system embodies similar characteristics to the heating and cooling system, however, it does have some major key differences, such as its ability to cut costs and be energy efficient by switching from different fuels such as oil and gas. The hybrid HVAC system functions by using a heat pump and furnace. The heat pump runs from electricity whereas the furnace runs from either natural gas or a heating oil such as propane. This HVAC system uses traditional thermostats and ducts and provides all the same benefits as a heating and cooling split system, with the added option to conserve energy by switching between energy sources, which is perfect for smaller homes in milder climates.

Packaged Heating and Air Conditioning Units

Lastly, we have packages units. Unlike the split system, the packaged heating and cooling system contains all of the HVAC components in one unit, which is typically installed on the roof, in the attic, or outside near the foundation of the establishment. This single-unit packaged system is great for smaller homes in warmer climates due to its relatively compact size, as well as its lack of power to produce a lot of heat. The packaged HVAC system is responsible for both the heating and cooling of the establishment, is easily maintainable, and is known to be much quieter compared to the other HVAC systems. Here at. Go Direct, we carry gas packaged units as well as heat pump packaged units and straight cool packaged units, both of which are electric. Along with these options, we also carry a variety of heat kits and HVAC accessories including thermostats and copper line sets. We have everything you need to upgrade you HVAC system today!
